Aviemore is a village that has given birth to the gradual and exciting growth of outdoor activities and pursuits evident today. Although there had been a small settlement on the town's current site since the early 17th century, it wasn't until the arrival of the railways in the mid-1800s that Aviemore really began to flourish. The first visitors were climbers and geologists looking to explore wonderful virgin mountains, but with the tourism boom in the 1960s, and particular interest in the area as a ski resort, Aviemore developed into the bustling outdoor activity-based town it is today. With its mountains, pine-clad slopes and wide river valley setting, Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park area is the perfect Highland holiday destination.
